I have been advocating for the use of "Synchronous Online Learning" platforms for nearly three decades as a core volunteer for the International Society for Technology in education. Beginning in Active Worlds in the late '90s, progressing into Second Life and branching out into OpenSimulator worlds, I learned early on that traditional education would scorn the use of these platforms as "games" partly because the broader picture of their use for learning and teaching threatened "the way we have always done it." Now that we must be "together at a distance," is it time? I doubt it, because those lastly quoted seven words are very, very stubborn and tend to rule.
